Winter begins in December with an average temperature of 41 degrees Fahrenheit in temperature and wraps up in March with an average of 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Snowfall during the wintertime in Chattanooga is common, with monthly averages reaching 1.7 inches in January. Snow is actually rare in the city proper and in adjacent valleys, but snowfall occurs more frequently at higher elevations in the north and west of Chattanooga. Overall precipitation is high throughout the winter with monthly averages reaching 4.9 inches in January and 4.8 in February. With the cooler temperatures and slight chance of snowfall, you’ll want to pack warmer, heavier clothes and shoes for this weather in the Chattanooga area.

For the locals here in Chattanooga, hiking is one of the biggest activities to do in the wintertime. Even though the temps are usually in the low 40ās the high amount of rainfall we get makes the waterfalls impressive and incredible to see. Not only are water levels high but there are no leaves on the trees this time of year which means that you can see for miles. Hikes that lead to a viewpoint are spectacular and hikers are able to take in much more of the mountainās landscapes and natural beauty in the wintertime.

Ice skating
Enjoy ice skating on an outdoor rink located in the beautiful, landscaped gardens of the Chattanooga Choo. This is a special feature that visits Chattanooga each winter during the holiday season (mid-November-mid January). When you are done, head across the street to Frothy Monkey for delicious hot chocolate and yummy treats or enjoy a stroll through the quaint Southside area.

Chattanoogaās biggest attractions like Ruby Falls, Rock City, the Incline Railway and the Tennessee Aquarium are still all OPEN throughout the winter months. We highly recommend the Aquarium and Ruby Falls since they are both indoor activities that you can do with your friends, family, and little ones.
