History in Chattanooga

The city of Chattanooga and the countryside beyond is filled with history. The name “Chattanooga” comes from the Creek Indian word for “rock coming to a point.” This refers to Lookout Mountain which begins in Chattanooga and stretches 88 miles through Alabama and Georgia. The city itself started out with two different names: Ross`s Landing and Lookout City. In 1838, the city officially took the name of “Chattanooga.”

There are several incredible museums such and we have listed some of our favorites below. A great activity to do with your family is to pack a picnic and take a short drive to Chickamauga, Georgia where you can visit the Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park and walk the 5,000 acres of walking trails and look through the monuments spread throughout the battlefield. You won`t want to miss out on this great list!

Kid Friendly

Chattanooga is a wonderful place to bring your whole family and most of our attractions are kid-friendly! Such as the Aquarium, Rock City, Ruby Falls, the Incline Railway, and more!

At River City Rentals, we would highly recommend the Creative Discovery Museum that is right in Downtown. A must-see for kids and so much to learn and discover while at the museum. Another fun adventure is Coolidge Park. In the summer, it`s a great way to escape the heat of the summer, and the kids can play in the water pad that has synchronized waterworks. In that same location, there is also a carousel with lots of safari animals that they can ride and you can end the afternoon with a short walk across the bridge to get some ice-cream.

Kayaking on the river, hiking through battlefields, paddle boarding on the lake, fishing for bass or crappie…Opportunities are endless with your kiddos! And staying on our of our Chattanooga vacation homes & cabins makes family trips easier and more comfortable.
